Kushiel's Avatar: The Movie by NACrnko Kushiel's Avatar: The Movie by NACrnko
Sorry it took me so long. But I had a HELL of a time finding photos of the actors that I liked. But all things considered, I liked the way that this turned out.

The casting breaks down as follows:

Eva Green - Phedre no Delaunay
John Rhys-Meyers - Joscelin Verreuil
Cameron Bright - Imriel de la Courcel
Sophie Okonedo - Kaneka
Adoni Maropis - The Mahrkagir (yes, I am aware of the irony that my choice of the guy to play the Mahrkagir is named 'Adoni'
Adrian Grenier - Hyacinthe
Scarlett Johansson - Ysandre de la Courcel
Angelina Jolie - Melisande Shahrizai

I also had a few others in mind, such as:

Lena Heady - Drucilla
Lawrence Makoare - Gashtaham (he was the Witch-King and Gothmog in Return of the King)
Dalip Singh - Tahmuras
Garrett Hedlund - Erich the Skaldi
Erick Avari - Ptolemy Dikaios
Brendan Gleeson - Quintilius Rousse
(of course) Karl Urban - Drustan mab Necthana

The only casting (for the entire Kushiel's Legacy series) that I haven't been able to really pin down is Barquiel L'Envers. Part of me says the Brian Cox would be good for the part, but physically he seems too stocky for it....meh. I'm open to suggestions (for conversation's sake).

For the tagline of the poster, I drew from one of my favorite scenes in the book: the part where Phedre goes to the Temple of Kushiel and converses with Michel Nevers. I really felt that that line (and this scene) really acted as a kind of overture for the entire book. For this scene, I would want a really great cameo - something like Christopher Lambert at Nevers.

Probably the most difficult part of visually adapting this book into a film poster is the fact that Drujan really only takes up half of the book and the rest is the journey to Saba and quest for Hyacinthe. However, I decided that if this movie were to be adapted to film, most of that latter half could be condensed into montages of travel and there's no way that this, as a movie, would be less than 3 hours. At least half of it would focus on Drujan.

This is also a testament to how typography-challenged I am. I had a different version posted right before this one with a different font for the title...totally unaware that it wasn't the same font as the other posters! And I couldn't for the life of me remember which one I used before! Grrrrrr!!!!! Luckily (after systematically comparing every damn font on photoshop side-by-side) I found it and reposted it. I knew that I would hate myself forever if I let something like that slide when I was THIS close to being done with the series.

Anyway, here's the final poster for the Kushiel's Legacy series! I don't know if I'll do posters for the Imriel saga. I decided to take a break from Carey for a while, and I'll probably pick her up again after the Imriel series is finished. For now, I'm onto other projects. Enjoy!

Ooh, Rosamund Pike for Ysandre.. Scarlett tries to be too sensual. Rosamund has that coolness with underlying compassion that Ysandre needs.

I have just started reading them and am currently half through Kushiel's Chosen. Already the story has captured my heart. Anyway, I have been silently wishing they might make a movie. Maybe someday they will. Also wonderful job choosing Adrian Grenier!

ADORED XD Though I don't agree with Melisande being played by Jolie, but I'm probably biased. Not a fan of Jolie, though Melisande is my fave char of ALL FRICKEN TIME XD Closely followed by Imriel and Mavros, of course

I just love the book series. I just wanted to see what it may look like if the books were adapted into films.

The series is Kushiel's Legacy by Jacqueline Carey. The first book is called Kushiel's Dart. I recommend the series like it's religious scripture :-)

Brendan Gleeson is a GENIUS idea. Maybe he's not beautiful, but he would make that character SO real.

I love this!!! Eva Greene as Phedra is truly inspired, and Angelina Jolie as Melisande! Nobody could play the role better! Amazing work, really.

I wasn't even looking for something about the Kushiel saga, but I was pleasantly suprised to find these! I love this series and am glad to find some fanart for it. I wanted to make some suggestions though on the form of the poster. If you're going to put so much emphasis on the image above, I would recommend making the actor's names smaller so the poster balances out. It would also allow you to keep the longer tagline, which would be too detailed otherwise. The images, however, are very well done and I love the dark feel of it in keeping with the storyline.

oh that's just beautiful. All your posters are!

You could consider Ray Stevenson for Barquiel L'Enver he's good at stern and angry looking..

Your choices are good, I especially agree on John Rhys Meyers for Joscelin. And I'll even forgive you for the missing braid
Phedre though, I haven't thought of Eva Green, I sort of envisioned Rachel Weisz in that part... But I can go with Eva.
I'm inclined though to agree with steadylightning that Catherine Zeta could make a good Melisande instead of Jolie.
Other than that..absolutely no objections

I was doing a google search to see if anyone had come up with some fan art and saw this. I was very excited at the notion of a movie based on this saga, but then it took me here and I was disappointed that it wasn't really happening. However I think you did a good job with this, and I think that Angelina Jolie would make a great Melisande. ^_^ I'm not too sure about Eva Green being Phedre though, but everyone must have a different image of what her character would look like. Again good job!

Joscelin needs to be played by someone with more angular features. Someone suggested Rachel McAdams for Ysandre. I actually prefer her. Ysandra has pale blonde hair.

Fortun is supposed to be the cutest of the three chevaliers, fyi. Phedre considers taking him as a lover.

I prefer Catherine Zeta for Melsande. Her features are more delicate -- and she looks more manipulative.

The Mahrkagir needs to have huge eyes. Those are his focal point. He should also look wasted and pale.

I prefer Russell Crowe for Quintillus. Would Grainne actually desire Brendan Gleeson?

I like many of the others a lot.... I wonder who you'd pick for Eamonn, Grainne, Boudoin, Lyonette, Barquiel (needs to be older than the Shane West or Antonio Banderas. Also, he has pale blonde hair and violet eyes).

Love your movie posters, I think you captured the spirit of the books quite well. I noticed in your comment that you could never find a suitable actor for L'Envers character, and you were willing to take suggestions. I always envisioned someone like Jason Isaacs as being appropriate for the role. He has that stern disapproving look, and I think would look good with pale hair. He might make a better Isidore though. *shrugs* Anyway Love the images and I like the cast, I'm glad someone else thought of Adrian Grenier as Hyacinthe. Great job!

Thanks for the input and the comments! I actually thought of Isaacs as D'Aiglemort also (the image of him as Lucius Malfoy made that pretty easy).

I must say that of all the fantasy books out there, I would like to see Carrey's Kusheline series made into movies.
That being said, I honestly (in my gullible self) thought this was a true movie poster. Bravo on the artistic display and creation.
I do agree with many of your actor/actress choices, though some surprised me; however, I could see the connection and I could see it happen.
I would be curious to see if a director could accentuate the beauty and the deep, emotional connection Terre d'Ange has with its people. I'd also be interested to see if the religious piety and aspect of the characters shows through the graphic, sultry, and physical side of the novels.

Extremely well done and put together. ;)

youre nuts. this is the best poster of all of them, congrats. that skull thing looks like a horse skull. whats up with that? i dont remember the quote, what was the context? anguisettes dont impart pain without compassion... they take it. its a bit misleading. woah i just now noticed the eye. thats awesome, the kind of thing youd notice only after seeing the ad several times.

It's actually a boar's skull. Gashtaham is described as wearing a mask made from the skull of a boar. And the quote is from early in the book when Phedre seeks council at the temple of Kushiel. Anguissettes don't impart it without compassion - Nevers says that the need to balance the scales is why anguissettes exist: to endure pain with perfect compassion.
